The Cowen family wanted somewhere hot to sit when the year turned cold. Mackay winters are mild by southern standards, but the pre-dawn air still bites through July. A full pool was overkill for how they’d actually use the space, so we sat down and mapped out a standalone X-Trainer spa — the full Compass ceramic-core construction, reduced to a hot-tub-scaled footprint.
Same ceramic-core construction as a full pool
The standalone spas share the full Compass ceramic-core shell construction — nothing about specifying the smaller footprint compromises what you get in the water. That was the deciding factor for the Cowens: a spa built as a permanent piece of the property, not a portable acrylic tub with an eight-year lifespan.
Sapphire in Mackay light
Sapphire is one of the more requested Bi-Luminite finishes. It flips between a deeper blue at midday and a softer teal in late afternoon — the Bi-Luminite dual-pigment system does the work rather than lighting. On a spa where the water surface reflects everything above it, that colour depth is what turns evening use into a genuinely nice experience rather than a chore.
Full jet package plus down jets
On the mechanical side we specified the full spa jet package plus down jets to keep water moving through the shell. That circulation matters on a spa that gets heavy use — heavily loaded water needs to move through the filter and heater constantly, not sit stratified.
Channel drain, not strip drain
Around the spa we ran a channel drain instead of a strip drain to handle splash-out cleanly. On a spa where the footprint is small, splash volume is proportionally higher than a full pool — a channel drain gives a properly dry surround for entering and exiting.
Multi-coloured LED for family use
Multi-coloured LED lighting was the finishing touch. The Cowens can hold warm amber for a quiet evening or work through the whole palette for the grandkids on a weekend.
A pool build without the pool
The Cowen build is a good example of what a standalone Compass spa can be when it’s specified as a permanent, warranted piece of the property rather than a bolt-on.
