Your first year with a self-cleaning pool: what you actually need to do

The best thing about owning a Compass Vantage self-cleaning pool is that it does 95% of the work. The slightly tricky thing about it is knowing which 5% is still yours.

Here’s what your first year as a Vantage owner in Mackay actually looks like, month by month.

Month 1 — Commissioning and settling in

Your pool has been filled, balanced by our installer, and handed over. In the first month:

  • Weekly: check the water level. Mackay evaporation in summer is real — you might lose 20–30mm a week. Auto-fill systems are standard on our installs but a quick eyeball tells you they’re working.
  • Weekly: empty the skimmer basket. Even with Vantage doing the sweep-work, leaves and blossom land on the surface and get skimmed. Takes 30 seconds.
  • Fortnightly: check the salt cell reading on the chlorinator. It’ll be steady in a new pool.
  • What Vantage does: everything else. The in-floor jets run automatically on your set cycle, sweeping the floor and walls to the drain.

Months 2–3 — Learn the rhythm

Your Vantage system has settled into its cycle. In these two months you’re learning how the pool responds to Mackay’s climate.

  • Water temperature will be climbing — you’ll notice the difference when the sun catches the water. Vantage circulation keeps top-to-bottom temperature even, which is much nicer to swim in than a stratified pool.
  • Water testing: once a fortnight, either with your own test kit or a bottle to a pool shop. Chlorine and pH are what matter. In a Vantage pool the numbers stay in range for weeks at a stretch.
  • Filter clean: around month 3, backwash the sand filter (or clean the cartridge, depending on your setup). Takes ten minutes.

Months 4–5 — Cyclone season prep

By this point you’re in October–November and the wet season is coming. Two things to do:

  • Trim overhanging vegetation. Anything that will drop material into the pool during a big blow — mango, palm fronds, poinciana leaves. Trim it back now.
  • Check the drain and skimmer. These are your first-line defences during heavy rain. Make sure both are clear.

During cyclone season itself, when big rain events hit, the pool overflow drain does the work. Vantage keeps running through the storm — the circulation actually helps keep the water clear.

Months 6–8 — The middle of the wet season

By January–February you’re in the thick of tropical summer. Water temperature will be high (28–30°C), which is fantastic for swimming but algae-friendly.

Vantage’s advantage in this window: even chemical distribution. Traditional pools without in-floor circulation get algae blooms in dead zones. Vantage pools don’t.

  • Water testing: back to weekly during peak summer.
  • Chlorine boost: after any big rain event that overfills the pool with runoff, run a quick shock treatment overnight.
  • Enjoy it. This is what the pool is for.

Months 9–11 — Autumn wind-down

By April–May the water is cooling slightly (still 24–26°C — Mackay is generous), and the maintenance load drops.

  • Reduce your Vantage cycle time — the pool doesn’t need as much circulation in cooler months.
  • Reduce your chlorinator output by 20–30% for the winter.
  • The salt cell may need a clean around now — a mild acid soak for 15 minutes, then rinse.

Month 12 — Annual service and reflection

Year one: complete. You’ve had a full seasonal cycle. Time for the annual service:

  • Filter media inspection — sand or cartridge.
  • Pump inspection — bearings and seals.
  • Chlorinator cell inspection and clean.
  • Auto-fill system check.

Most owners have this done by a pool valet company. It takes an hour and costs $150–$250 depending on scope. We can recommend a couple in the Mackay area.

What no-one warned you about

Two things Vantage owners in Mackay tell us they didn’t expect:

The pool becomes background infrastructure. After a couple of months you stop thinking about it. Kids swim, guests use it, the water stays clean, you have your Saturday mornings back. This is a surprisingly big lifestyle change.

You use it more than you thought. Because the barriers to a swim are so low — no vacuum to run first, no chemical dose to add — you and the family actually get in the water more. That’s the metric that matters.

Frequently asked

Straight answers.

How much time will I really spend on maintenance?

15–20 minutes a week during peak summer, closer to 5 minutes a week in winter. Compare that to 2–3 hours a week for a traditional fibreglass pool with a robotic cleaner.

Do I need to service the Vantage jets themselves?

No routine maintenance. They're lifetime-warranted and only need attention if one physically fails — which is rare and typically happens years into ownership, if ever.

What do I do during a cyclone or major rain event?

Very little. Cover the pool if you want to protect it from wind-blown debris, but Vantage keeps running through rain and the drainage system handles overflow. Once the storm passes, do a chlorine shock and the pool is back to normal.

When do I need a professional pool service?

Realistically, once a year for an annual service. Some owners like a monthly valet check for peace of mind — costs $60–$100 a month in the Mackay region. Others do everything themselves.

How do I test the water?

Either a home test kit (Poolmaster or similar, $50 one-off, lasts years) or take a water sample to any pool shop — Mackay has several — and they'll test it in-store for free.
