Vinyl ester resin
A dramatically more water-resistant resin than the polyester industry standard — the foundation of osmosis resistance.
Every Compass pool we install is built with a patented ceramic composite core — an aerospace-grade structural layer that's dramatically stronger than a standard fibreglass shell. Not an upgrade. Not a premium tier. Standard on every pool.
Not all fibreglass pools are built the same. The industry-standard shell is a three-layer laminate: gelcoat, vinylester skin, and structural glass. It's what almost every other fibreglass pool manufacturer uses, and it's fine — until the ground moves.
The Compass Ceramic Core™ replaces the middle structural layer with a proprietary composite: vinyl ester resin blended with ceramic microspheres originally developed for aerospace applications. The result is a shell that's noticeably thicker in cross-section, chemically resistant to osmosis, and structurally engineered to flex with reactive soils without cracking — exactly what a Mackay or Isaac Region installation calls for.
Four engineering choices that separate a Compass shell from the industry standard.
A dramatically more water-resistant resin than the polyester industry standard — the foundation of osmosis resistance.
Ultra-strong, waterproof hollow spheres originally developed for aerospace applications, blended into the structural core.
Compass modified its manufacturing equipment to lay the ceramic composite consistently across the entire shell — a patented process.
The finished shell is visibly thicker than competitors — cross-section samples are available to see in person.
It's a structural composite layer Compass developed in the early 1990s to reinforce fibreglass pool shells. The recipe: vinyl ester resin (highly water-resistant) blended with ceramic microspheres (super-strong hollow spheres originally used in aerospace). The blend forms a thick reinforcing layer inside the shell that resists osmosis, doubles tensile strength, and lets the pool flex with reactive soil rather than cracking under it.
Mackay soils are workable but they move — the wet-dry cycles across the region can expand and contract the ground by significant amounts each year. Coastal blocks bring salt-heavy air. Inland Isaac blocks bring reactive black soils. A stronger fibreglass shell handles all of that without you thinking about it. It's cheap insurance built in from day one.
Effectively yes. Osmosis blistering happens when water gets pulled through a permeable resin over years, forming black spots under the surface. The vinyl ester resin in the Ceramic Core creates a chemically stable water-blocking layer, so there's nothing for water to pull through. It's why the cosmetic warranty on a Bi-Luminite Compass runs ten years — no cheaper shell manufacturer can match it.
Yes — the Ceramic Core is what enables Compass to offer what we believe is the strongest warranty package in the fibreglass industry. Bi-Luminite Compass pools come with a true lifetime structural warranty and a 10-year cosmetic warranty. Vivid pools come with a 25-year structural warranty and a 7-year cosmetic warranty. Both are transferable to a new owner for up to 25 years if you sell.
Yes — Compass lodged the original patent in the early 1990s. It involved specially modified factory spraying equipment to lay the ceramic-microsphere and vinyl ester blend consistently and at scale. That's the reason no other manufacturer offers the same construction — it isn't licensed to anyone else.
The obvious visible difference is thickness — a Compass shell is noticeably thicker in cross-section than a standard fibreglass pool. But the more important differences are chemical (osmosis resistance from vinyl ester resin) and structural (roughly double the tensile strength from the microsphere composite). Together they explain how Compass can offer a lifetime structural warranty when the fibreglass industry standard is 25 years.
Yes. Cross-section samples are available and we bring one to every site visit. You can see the ceramic composite layer as a distinct thicker band inside the shell wall, sitting between the outer skin and the interior gelcoat. It's a genuinely useful thing to look at — the visible difference is bigger than the words on paper suggest.
Yes — every shape, every size, every colour, every install. Ceramic Core isn't a premium tier or an optional upgrade. It's the standard Compass construction method and every pool we install has it, including the smallest Plunge shapes and the standalone spas.
